KhaOs gallery presented “Somewhere to Swim” at its Franco-Spanish art space in Montjuïc, Barcelona, featuring artist and photographer Anna Dobrovolskaya-Mints and her photographs of bare swimming pools.
The story is about the symbolism of the scars of the lockdown — emptiness, and the movement of water captured and frozen in space and time. An allegory of a world paused, set against perpetual motion.
Dobrovolskaya-Mints visited numerous British hotels during the spring 2020 lockdown, but all she found were lone receptionists, fences and endless emptiness. Her photographs of swimming pools become symbols of an industry collapsed and of inevitable decay.
“When the pandemic first hit, we thought it would be over soon — but as, one by one, the countries of the world closed their doors, we became prisoners. Freedom has been replaced by fear and immobility. We thought it would end tomorrow.”
